If you happen to be in London

One of our international couples, who attended our festival recently, put on a improvised display of vals over in London. Well, one half of them at least. Just some playful tango to vals over in London. Witness it below if interested.

It is definitely of interest 😉

As the month of October draws to a close if you turn up as a couple there is a special offer when you can pay per person 50 EUR. The offer is gone after this round of classes. It is a new six week course for beginners so better hurry up!

Dancing in the sea

Sometimes, we wish that we could go dancing in the sea…

We hold our regular Sunday night milonga starting at 2000 hrs until the DJ calls it a night at the Metropole Hotel. Dance until the waves etch away the beautiful figures on the sand…

Practica? On a Wednesday?

REALLY?

Yes, Enrique Ringa will be on holidays this week so they will a Beginner’s Class taught by members of Cork Argentine Tango Society from 1930 – 2030. And then will be a practica. A practica is different from milonga. Here people can take what you learned and ask questions during it. Questions about technique, timing of a movement or if what you learned is different to what was taught. Believe that has happened to the best of us!

Remember if you turn up as a couple there is a special offer when you can pay per person 50 EUR for six classes only for the month of October. Remember, the card you receive lasts forever!

Alternatively you can practice on your own as this lady does. Practice. Practice – Milonga!

Women – thank you

This is why we are so thankful to all the women out there.

Slowly, through socializing and lots of creative projects with other women in the community, I started to discover how much loving, caring attunement, hilarity and fun there can be in women’s friendships. How worthy of trust these women were. – Mitra Martin

I remember turning up to one tango milonga on a Sunday night. I was one of five men present. I had been dancing five years at this point. I was with the least experience of the five men present. And I wondered where the hell had all the women gone?

It eventually filled up and there were not enough men to go around. And once again there was beautiful girls in flowing dresses waiting to be picked out. The feet were tapping in time to the music. The faces were neutral but their hearts wanted to sink into the tango world; to carve out the gorgeous circles as they travelled around the room; to give meaning to the word tango if only for twelve minutes.

Have a read. And be the difference you want to see in the world.

Vals? Don’t you mean waltz?

Is waltz to do with ballroom dancing? Well, yes and no. There are four of types of tango but for the purpose of this exercise let us concentrate on the waltz or vals to use it common term.

Ruben Veliz & Sabrina Veliz are a wonderful couple who graced us on several occasions at Cork Tango Festival. They did a similar performance in Cork in 2014 as they did in this video. You can hear the distinctive rise and fall of the vals tune. The tune is La Serenata by Tanturi orchestra.

The reason this matters is because last week we worked on sequences and option in vals in the improvers and advanced classes. Something for everyone, no?

So…

There were three classes on Wednesday and you aren’t sure whether to come along or not. They were so good. And you were so rusty…

We all had to start somewhere. Come along on Sunday 18th of September at 2030 in the Metropole Hotel ending at whatever time the DJ chooses. You will be amazed by people approaching you and asking you to dance…

Tango Quote #3

Tango is danced closely. Sometimes even very close. It certainly looks very intimate. But not necessarily should be. Dancers, especially men, should not abuse the intimacy. A woman is a queen, and should be respected as such. For a man, it is most important to respect and protect, and even follow his partner… Gentlemen, it is not good to drag your partner, even if she is a beginner. YOU MUST FOLLOW YOUR PARTNER, EVEN IF SHE DANCES WRONG!!! Yes, leaders must follow. That is the greatest paradox of a good dancer – men are leaders, but they follow women. That is a woman who defines the style of dancing, distance, intimacy, speed, and rhythm. You do not agree? Then you will never be a good dancer with whom every woman would love to dance. This and only this defines who is the best dancer in Argentine Tango.

A teasing video…

…to start the new year. This is classic stage tango. Although three and a half million can’t be wrong I suppose. Witness Magdalena Valdez and Facundo Gallo dancing what they love to do to a wonderful orchestra.

Want to dance like that? Want to be held like that? Want to feel like that? We all started for the first time. Why not give it a try on Wednesday the 14th of September at 1920?
